A groundbreaking is held for a new hotel in Downtown Evansville.

“It’s an upscale Hyatt Place,” explained Hemang Shah, managing partner of Kinship Hospitality. “It’s going to sit very nicely in Downtown and compliment the Double Tree.”

The Hyatt Place will be located at Second and Chestnut streets, at the site of the former Scottish Rite Cathedral. Shah said construction had been delayed about six months.

“Some utilities and underground issues that we resolved,” Shah said. “We feel very confident that what we are going to build here will be a beautiful hotel that everyone can be proud of.”

Kinship Hospitality will invest about $18 million in the property.

“I think we had all the rain that we needed,” he said. “So, I think we are blessed with the sunshine today. Hopefully, if the weather permits, in 15 months, we’ll be open for business.”

With the addition of this Hyatt Place, the City of Evansville will have more than 800 hotel rooms downtown. That’s key for convention business, which is slowly returning to the city.
